Came back to tumblr for supporting the game :)
This soundtrack is wonderful, you should all take a peek!
This blog is on hiatus. I’m getting off tumblr to focus on work. I unfollowed everyone so I wouldn’t be tempted to open it. Feel free to unfollow for the time being. When I resurrect this blog, I will follow you back :)
I am done with the shipping business guys! Can’t be too invested in fictional people (also the emotional damage is no joke).
This halloween I taped a sign saying COMMUNISM in red on my chest and handed out one piece of candy for each kid and if they complain I say, “Well, look at that you just learned about Communism.” One dad already gave me a dirty look.
stop my mom made me take it off because one little girl demanded more candy and I said “whoa calm down, capitalism”
I’ve seen that there have been several long replies to that, and I didn’t bother to read them. But I’m assuming you’re talking about this one, so I read it and will address it.
Frankly, while I like how the person formed their essay and see that they’re intelligent in their writing, the person misinterpreted the post. It was good enough for about ten thousand people to understand for what it was, but for some, it would have been much clearer if I had changed the title to something lengthier like “PSA for people who judge people for shipping things,” and if I had changed “shipping” to “romantic shipping”.
But really, I figured that would have been obvious, not to mention that it’s just not wise to make a lengthy title on tumblr when it comes to getting notes. It’s not wise to make anything too lengthy. So I kept it short to make people more likely to actually read it.
Gypseian addresses my tags from that post and develops an entire argument about how they’re all gay ships and the subject of homofetishism and that we all know they’re not likely to come to fruition. However, in all honesty, I used the tags “destiel”, “johnlock”, “merthur”, “sterek”, and “drarry” because I knew they were probably the most popular pairing tags and thus would make the post more likely to get notes. I did it for the fucking notes.
And then, with each of my points in the original posts, I was actually indirectly addressing a lot of specific things I’d seen around tumblr. I never addressed the other replies (which were far less polite than this essay, so thank you, Gypseian) because I didn’t want to do this and essentially ruin the post. But it looks like I’ll have to.
shipping is NOT purely about sex
Gypseian brought up that one post from an old gay couple who didn’t ship Johnlock and was bringing up how they mentioned that people had accused them of being homophobic for not shipping it, and then later going on to say that the only reason most of us ship it is because we want to see John and Sherlock have sex. That was actually the post that made me want to make this post in the first place, because I wanted to get it out there to people who don’t ship things that they shouldn’t assume that just because someone ships something [romantically] that doesn’t mean they only care about sex. Yes, some people do focus on ships for the sex. But not everyone does. So don’t fucking assume that someone only cares about their OTP having sex, is what I was saying.
shipping is NOT believing the characters are already in a relationship
This was partially indirectly addressing quotes from Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch saying “They’re convinced we’re going at it when the cameras are off.” And I wanted to say that no, Mr. Handsome-batch, your face may be handsome but you are wrong. Because while, sure, shipping CAN include legitimately believing two characters are already in a secret relationship, that’s not what shipping is. And that’s what actors seem to treat it like. But no, that’s not it. Don’t assume that someone literally believes John and Sherlock were in a romantic relationship just because they ship them. That’s called deluding yourself.
shipping is NOT wanting the show/book/movie to be surely about your ship
There was no post in particular that I can remember, but it’s essentially another thing telling non-shippers to not assume things of fans. Some tend to think that just because someone is invested in the relationship between Dean and Castiel, they must want the whole show to be about Destiel. And that’s both insulting and dumb. You can enjoy a relationship and really want them to get together and also enjoy the whole rest of the show because its plot is amazing aside from your OTP. We all kept watching Merlin afer Arwen became canon, didn’t we? (And frankly, if you stopped watching it at that point, I don’t blame you at all. Ships aside, Merlin’s development of female characters was atrocious.)
shipping is NOT automatically ignoring the overall plot
Essentially the same thing as before. Don’t assume that someone ignores the rest of the plot just because one relationship in the show is their favorite.
shipping is NOT a game
This one seems to have gotten the most arguments, as well as one hate anon. People are both laughing at me and asking what I even mean. Which I understand. I could have been clearer. But what I was referring to was the fact that people seem to either assume this of others or do it themselves: shippers just take characters at random and decide to pair them together, and sometimes they don’t even base it on canonical interaction. People make all sorts of fanfics with really weird things that both don’t exist in real life and also wouldn’t be approved of. They’re turning shipping into a game, basically. And while I can’t judge anyone for shipping like this (though I could never do it), it’s bad to assume this of someone. Shipping is not a game because it’s not a thing people choose. No one just straight-up decides to ruin their life like that. I didn’t watch Supernatural with the intention to ship Destiel. I saw them, I watched them interact, and I noticed them fall in love. And I wanted them to be together because of it. It wasn’t a thing I thought about, it just happened. Shipping things so passionately just happened.
And that is what I think of the long reply. My own long reply.
Benedict on David Letterman May 9.
You don’t understand. I’ve been waiting for this moment since I read Performance in a Leading Role.
The Adorable: (SPOILERY COMMENT) Am I the only johnlock shipper that is not annoyed about all this Mary business?
I won’t lie..I was not thrilled when I heard about it. But then I thought about Merlin: Arthur married Gwen and we still had (in my opinion) the best Merthur moments after that.
I’m kind of intrigued about the effect that it will have in John and Sherlock’s relationship. I’m…
I won’t lie I am upset but it is canon so it prolly can’t be avoided (I am totally cool with that). What makes me really upset is the shaming that’s been going on since the spoilery photos of the S03E02 and Ian’s tweet.
